The Turku Music Festival is pleased to announce two additional concerts for the Festival this August. One of them, \u2018Dichterliebe & Eight Songs for a Mad King\u2019 on 14 August at 18.00, will be a hybrid event, available to attend in person or as a live stream online in the lippu.streaming service. The other added concert will be a candlelight recital by baritone Waltteri Torikka at Turku Cathedral on the Night of the Arts, 12 August at 21.00.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are confident that by August the vaccination coverage in the population will be high enough to allow audiences to be safely admitted to live concerts. We believe that friends of classical music are eager to hear high-quality live music again. Nevertheless, we are mindful of any remaining individual restrictions with regard to public events, which is why we decided to give one of these concerts as a hybrid event with live streaming. We feel sure that our audiences will appreciate this option,\u201d says Maija Paloheimo, interim managing director of the Turku Music Festival. <\/p>\n
\u2018Dichterliebe & Eight Songs for a Mad King\u2019 is a recital featuring two completely different works on themes of love and madness. Dichterliebe is the best-known song cycle by Robert Schumann, performed here by tenor Tuomas Katajala with Naoko Sonoda on piano. This is followed by baritone Thomas Florio\u2019s internationally celebrated interpretation of Eight Songs for a Mad King by Peter Maxwell Davies. This programme was originally scheduled as the concluding concert of the 2020 Festival. <\/p>\n

The programme of the Festival will otherwise go ahead as previously published. The opening concert of the festival on 7 August at 19.00 features music by P\u0113teris Vasks, performed by the Ostrobothnian Chamber Orchestra and violinist Ilya Gringolts conducted by Klaus M\u00e4kel\u00e4. Olavi Uusivirta appears at the Lindblom Hall at the Ruissalo Shipyard on 11 and 12 August at 20.00. The Festival concludes with a flourish on 18 August at 19.00; this exciting recital features Wagner soprano Lise Davidsen, whose career is on an upward trajectory including the opening of La Scala in Milan this spring, and Leif Ove Andsnes, one of Norway\u2019s most celebrated pianists.
