Charismatic Hollywood actor John Malkovich returns to the Turku Music Festival! Just Call Me God is a production that takes a look at tyranny through drama, organ music and special effects. Malkovich plays a recently deposed dictator. Legendary organist Martin Haselböck, in the character of a clergyman, performs works of his own along with organ music by Johann Sebastian Bach, César Franck, Charles-Marie Widor, Olivier Messiaen and György Ligeti. Before Turku, the production will have been staged at the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg, at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, at the Konzerthaus in Vienna and at the Barbican in London.
“John Malkovich is a living legend, and the production is a highly topical one and an excellent fit for our programme in 2021. Next year marks the 10th anniversary of Turku’s year as European Capital of Culture and of Mr Malkovich’s previous visit. I believe that this production will be thought-provoking and emotionally engaging, thanks to the acting skills of Mr Malkovich, but a significant contribution is also made by organ virtuoso Martin Haselböck,” says Liisa Ketomäki, managing director of the Turku Music Festival.
