OPENING CONCERT at Turku Concert Hall, 7 August 2021 at 19.00

The Turku Music Festival is currently preparing for summer 2021, where the programme will include both concerts postponed from summer 2020 and concerts previously planned for 2021. The opening concert of next summer’s Festival is dedicated to the music of the Festival’s composer-in-residence, Pēteris Vasks from Latvia. The programme includes his violin concerto Distant Light with Ilya Gringolts as soloist. The Ostrobothnian Chamber Orchestra will be conducted by Klaus Mäkelä, artistic director of the festival, and the composer will be in attendance.

“I can still remember when I heard Pēteris’s music for the first time. His Violin Concerto Distant Light opened up a window to a new world for me, and I have been a fan of his wonderful music ever since. I am really proud to welcome him as a guest to the Turku Music Festival,” says artistic director Klaus Mäkelä.

Olavi Uusivirta and band at the Ruissalo Shipyard, 11 and 12 August 2021

Concerts by popular artist Olavi Uusivirta that were originally scheduled for summer 2020 were postponed ‘as is’ to August 2021 and will happen at the Ruissalo Shipyard on 11 and 12 August at 20.00.

“We want to provide a wide range of experiences, and I am sure that Olavi Uusivirta and his band will guarantee an enjoyable evening. Olavi is one of Finland’s most talented performers in popular music,” says Liisa Ketomäki, managing director of the Turku Music Festival. “It is impossible to predict how the coronavirus situation will develop between now and next summer, but globally – for instance at the Metropolitan Opera – the assumption seems to be that the 2021–2022 season will represent a return to normal. We certainly hope so and would love to be able to welcome summer visitors to Turku again in August 2021. If there are any major changes between now and then, we will of course just have to go with the flow,” says Ketomäki.

Concert featuring Nadine Sierra rescheduled to August 2022

The concert with the Turku Philharmonic conducted by Lorenzo Passerini and featuring soprano Nadine Sierra, originally scheduled for summer 2020, has been rescheduled ‘as is’ to August 2022.

“We had to go forward as far as August 2022 to find a new concert date that suited Nadine Sierra, Lorenzo Passerini and the Turku Philharmonic, so that we could reschedule the concert without making any changes. There may be some slight amendments to the programme, for instance in terms of the specific opera arias included, but the framework and concept remain the same. The new date is Thursday 18 August 2022. Though it is almost two years away, we are publishing this now, because we have had an exceptional number of inquiries from customers wishing to secure their tickets well in advance,” says Ketomäki.
